Mother goddess is a term used to refer to a goddess who represents motherhood, fertility, creation, or who embodies the bounty of the Earth. The statuettes used in representing mother goddesses are referred to as Fertility idols. They were made with various materials such as bronze, silver, limestone and more commonly, terracotta. They were usually represented in abstracted female forms with exaggerated features. Emphasis were usually placed on their breasts, stomach and genital areas.
